What is Obi Kola?

Obi Kola nuts are used in West Africa for social and ceremonial purposes.

  • 3-lobe Obi: Often offered to Esu and Ogun

  • 4-lobe Obi: Often offered to Orunmila and other Orisas (with lobe selection rituals)

  • 5-lobe Obi: May be adapted for Orisas that require four lobes by removing the extra lobe—whether male or female—so that two male and two female lobes remain.

Obi Kola is the fruit of the kola tree (Cola acuminata – white kola, and Cola nitida – pink kola), which grows 40–60 ft tall and produces star-shaped fruit containing 2–5 nuts.

Fresh kola has a bitter taste, which becomes milder as it dries.
